Who We Are

During the 2020 pandemic, my friend Alex, working from home, felt the isolation we all experienced during quarantine. To fill the void, he adopted Pookie, a blue-crowned conure from a bird rescue. Pookie, at 20 years old, had never been handled and was separated from his mate. Despite Alex's efforts over a couple of years, Pookie remained distant, behaving like a wild bird and avoiding human contact. As life normalized in 2023 and Alex returned to his workplace, Pookie was left alone, leading Alex to return him to the rescue. Surprisingly, the rescue charged an "intake fee" equal to the "adoption fee." Alex paid, hoping Pookie would find a more suitable home. The rescue quickly posted on Facebook that Pookie was rehomed to another pet home, but sadly, he was up for adoption once again, for the third time.

This prompted us to advocate for change in aviculture, recognizing that not all birds thrive as pets. While some enjoy human companionship, others are happier with their own kind. It's this understanding that led to the founding of The Central Florida Bird Rescue, to ensure birds like Pookie find the right environment, whether it be with people as pets or other birds in aviaries, sanctuaries or zoos.

Established in 2024, the Central Florida Exotic Bird Rescue became a reliable sanctuary for pet bird owners who face the difficult decision of rehoming their birds. Our mission is to ensure the perfect match between each bird and its new home.

Our approach includes:

- Providing a secure environment for surrendered birds
- Quarantining and conducting thorough examinations by a licensed veterinarian
- Performing comprehensive blood tests, with results available upon request
- Evaluating birds with a certified avian specialist boasting over 25 years in aviculture and parrot behavior
- Placing birds in suitable homes based on behavioral assessments (considering children, other birds, pets, etc.)
- Screening potential owners through a detailed application process
- Matching birds with the most compatible owner or family according to screening outcomes
- Mandating follow-ups after adoption, including proof of veterinary care

We stand for trust through transparency, hence our commitment to maintaining an up-to-date website reflecting our practices, policies, and available birds. We hold ourselves accountable to the birds, their owners, and our board of directors, ensuring openness and integrity in our operations. We foster a welcoming, thoughtful space for both people and birds, advocating for everyone's involvement in advancing aviculture and responsible pet ownership, with a strong emphasis on transparency.
